disorders including diabetes mellitus, neonatal
hypoglycemia, idiopathic hypoglycemia, and pancreatic islet
cell carcinoma.

Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Collect blood in a light green (Lithium heparin-PST) tube. Centrifuge and send 0.5 mL plasma refrigerated.
Plasma
Draw blood in a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride)
tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL of potassium oxalate/sodium
fluoride plasma refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL
of serum refrigerated.
Note: 1. Indicate serum on request
form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
Newborns
Fasting: 70-100 mg/dL
Nonfasting: 74-140 mg/dL
Critical values: <30 mg/dL or >300 mg/dL
Adults
Fasting: 70-100 mg/dL
Random: 74-140 mg/dL
Critical values: <50 mg/dL or >450 mg/dL
