Test Code FIBN Fibrinogen, Plasma

Important Note

Due to specimen stability issues, this test cannot be collected at sites other than St Joseph Hospital.  Please ask patients to come to the hospital lab for their specimen collection.

Additional Codes

EPIC:  LAB314

Methodology

Clauss Quantitative Assay for Functional Fibrinogen

Used in the diagnosis and monitoring of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) as well as monitoring treatment with thrombolytic therapy and the detection of fibrinogen deficiency/dysfunction.

Performing Laboratory

St. Joseph Hospital

Specimen Requirements

Draw a full, light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge at 2,500 rpm for 15 minutes or 3,000 rpm for 10 minutes.  Plasma is stable for 8 hours at ambient temp.

Reference Values

207 - 465 mg/dL

Critical value:  <100 mg/dL

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday through Sunday

Available STAT

Test Classification and CPT Coding

Clinical Significance

An increase of fibrinogen level is found in cases of diabetes, inflammatory syndromes, and obesity.  A decrease of the fibrinogen level is observed in DIC and fibrinogenolysis.  Furthermore, fibrinogen seems to be involved in the pathogenicity of thrombotic cardiovascular events.
