Useful For
Also know as the O'Sullivan Test, the one hour glucose screen is used to detect gestational diabetes. Screening is typically performed between weeks 24-28 of gestation but patients with risk factors may benefit from earlier screening.

Specimen Requirements
Patients do not need to fast for this procedure.
Plasma: Draw blood in a light green top (PST) or grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube 1 hour after a standard 50 gram oral carbohydrate challenge. Centrifuge to separate plasma from cells and send 0.5 mL of plasma refrigerated.
Reference Values
Patients with 1 hour glucose values greater than 140 mg/dl should be evaluated with a standard 2 or 3-hour OGTT.
