Methodology
Slide-Buffered Guaiac Test for Occult Blood and pH on a Gastric Specimen (Gastroccult®)
Used in determining the presence of hematin or hemoglobin from hemolyzed RBCs in a gastric specimen.

Specimen Requirements
1. Submit 0.1 mL of gastric aspirate or vomitus in a screw-capped, plastic container.
2. Label container with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
3. Forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Notes: 1. Specimen should be tested for pH within a few minutes after collection.
2. Specimen applied to occult blood test area may be developed immediately or within 4 days.
3. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Note: Many foods (ie, red meat, raw fruits, vegetables) have peroxidase activity which can produce a false positive Gastroccult® test result. Thus, a positive result does not always indicate the presence of human blood.
