Methodology

Direct Homogenous Enzymatic Assay


Used in assessing risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Increased HDL cholesterol is associated with the longevity syndrome. Low HDL/LDL ratio is directly related to the risk of developing CAD.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred:

Plasma

Draw blood in a light green-top (lithium heparin gel) tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection, and send 1 mL of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated.

Note:  Label specimen as “plasma”.

 

Acceptable:

Serum

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube or a serum gel tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.

Note:  Label specimen as “serum”

Reference Values

2-17 yrs:   Low: < 40 mg/dL

                  Borderline Low: 40 - 45 mg/dL

                  Acceptable:  > 45 mg/dL

>18 yrs:    Males:  > 40 mg/dL

                 Females: > 50 mg/dL
