Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

 

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send 2 mL of EDTA whole blood. If there is a delay in transport of >2 hours, send specimen refrigerated.

Reference Values

HEMOGLOBIN

Newborns:  14.5-22.5 g/dL
Males:  14.0-18.0 g/dL
Females:  12.0-16.0 g/dL

 

Critical values:

Newborns:  <8.0 g/dL or >23.0 g/dL

Adults:  <6.0 g/dL or >23.0 g/dL

 

HEMATOCRIT
Males:  42-52%

Females:  37-47%
Critical values:  <18% or >55%
