Methodology
Timed Bichromatic End point
Used in the diagnosis of a wide range of dysfunctions including anemias, nephrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatitis. Both iron and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) measurements are important for definitive diagnosis.

Specimen Requirements
Preferred:
Plasma
Draw blood in a light green-top (lithium heparin gel) tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection, and send 1 mL of lithium heparin plasma refrigerated.
Note: Label specimen as “plasma”.
Acceptable:
Serum
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube or a serum gel tube. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.
Note: Label specimen as “serum”
Reference Values
0-3 months: 100-250 µg/dL
4-19 months: 40-100 µg/dL
20 months-13 years: 50-120 µg/dL
>13 years
Males: 61 - 157 µg/dL
Females: 37 - 145 µg/dL
