Methodology

Enzymatic, quantitative

Used in the diagnosis and treatment of lactic acidosis (abnormally high acidity of the blood).

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube(s). Centrifuge immediately and separate the plasma from the cells within 15 minutes of collection.  Refrigerate plasma immediately.  

Stable 24 hours at 2-8°C

Reference Values

0.5 - 2.0 mmol/L

Critical:  > 2.0 mmol/L
