Methodology

Direct Microscopic Examination


Useful for the detection of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) eggs from perianal region.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection at ambient temperature only.

 

Collect specimen using SWUBETM Paddle Collection Kit supplied by Microbiology Laboratory as follows:

1. Specimen is best obtained between 2200 to 2300 hours or upon waking and before bowel movement or bath.
2. Gently press paddle’s sticky side against several areas of perianal region while spreading open perianal folds. (Stool specimen is not acceptable.)

3. Place paddle into transport container and tighten cap.
4. Label container with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), date of birth, medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
5. Forward promptly. If there is a delay in transport of >24 hours, send specimen refrigerated.
Note:  1. Follow handout instructions that accompany SWUBETM paddle.
2. Pinworm eggs are very infectious. Wash hands after collection.
3. At least 4 consecutive negative slides should be observed before patient is considered free of infection.
