Methodology

Direct Chemiluminescent Assay


Used in detection of early-stage prostate cancer in conjunction with digital rectal examination, and for indicating tumor recurrence and response to therapy for patients with a history of prostate cancer.


Note:  The PSA assay should not be used as a cancer screening test. It is not an absolute test for malignancy and should be used in conjunction with information available from clinical evaluation and other diagnostic procedures.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred:  Plasma: Lithium heparin PST tube (Light green top)

 

Acceptable: Serum:  Gold top or red-top tube(s)

 

Collect blood prior to prostatic manipulations. (Grossly hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and send 1 mL of plasma or serum refrigerated.
Note:  1. Include patient’s age on request form.   2. Prostatic manipulations may falsely elevate PSA values.
