Specimen Requirements

Preferred:  Lithium heparin gel tube (Light green top)

 

Acceptable: Gold top or red-top tube(s) 

 

Collect blood prior to prostatic manipulations. (Grossly hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Centrifuge and send 1 mL of plasma or serum refrigerated.
Notes:  1. Include patient’s age on request form.   2. Prostatic manipulations may falsely elevate PSA values.

TOTAL PSA (TPSA)  0.0 - 4.0 ng/mL

FREE PSA (FPSA)    0.0 - 4.0 ng/mL

 

The Total PSA range of 4.0 - 10.0 ng/mL has been described as a "gray zone".  The percent Free PSA

(FPSA / TPSA x 100) may be useful as an aid in distinguishing prostate cancer from benign prostate conditions in men 50 years or older with a TPSA of 4.0 to 10.0 ng/mL.
