Methodology
Conventional Culture Technique
Identification and susceptibility testing will automatically be performed on appropriate pathogens at an additional charge.
Used in the detection and identification of Campylobacter, Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Shigella species.
Note: A special request must be made for Yersinia or organisms other than the species indicated.

Specimen Requirements
1. Collect a walnut-size stool specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. If a delay in transport of >2 hours is anticipated, send specimen in culture preservative vial.
Note: 1. Avoid recent antibiotics, X-ray contrast material, antidiarrheal medications, antacids, bismuth, or oil instillation.
2. Loss of Shigella may result with refrigeration.

4. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Reference Values
No Campylobacter, Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella, or Shigella species isolated.
Increased amounts of other possible pathogens are reported if normal flora is decreased.
