Methodology
Conventional Culture Technique
Identification and susceptibility testing will automatically be performed on appropriate pathogens at an additional charge.
Used in the detection and identification of common bacteria and yeast.
Note: Direct Gram stain is performed on all surgical cultures.

Specimen Requirements
1. Prepare site: wash wound margins well with surgical soap followed by 70% alcohol.
2. Use Fisherbrand® transport swab to obtain specimen.
3. Remove cap with swab attached.
4. Obtain 2 swab specimens or a double swab from deep wound and/or drainage.
5. Place swabs in Fisherbrand® transport tube with Stuart’s transport media to ensure specimen preservation.
6. Label tube with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
7. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
