Methodology

Reflectance Spectrophotometry (Siemens MULTISTIX®)

Note:  If leukocyte esterase, nitrite, protein, or occult blood is positive or if the appearance is not clear, a microscopic urinalysis will automatically be performed.  If leukocyte esterase and/or nitrite is positive, a culture will be performed.

           If microscopic exam shows WBC > 10 and/or bacteria > Trace, a culture will be performed.

Specimen Requirements

1. Prepare patient for a clean-catch, midstream urine specimen.

2. After urine stream begins, place screw-capped, sterile container under stream of urine, and collect 15-30 mL of urine in container.
3. After finishing, tighten cap on container securely, and wash any spilled urine from outside of container.
4. Label container with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
5. Refrigerate specimen within 1 hour of collection and send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note:  Follow instructions in “Urine Collection” in “Special Instructions” for clean-catch, midstream specimens.

An interpretive report will be provided.


Critical value:  Protein (OBGYN only):  ≥100 mg/dL
