Specimen Requirements

Vaginal fluid specimens should be obtained using only the BD Affirm™ Ambient Temperature Transport System. Separate swabs should be used for other tests.

Using the sterile swab provided obtain a sample from the posterior vaginal fornix by twist or rolling the swab against the vaginal wall two or three times, ensuring the entire circumference of the swab has touched the vaginal wall. Swab the lateral wall while removing the swab. Immediately place the swab into the sample collection tube. Carefully crush the ampule of preservative provided and dispense full amount into collection tube. Break the swab above the tube at pre-scored juncture and cap. Label the tube with the patient information. Testing should occur within 72 hours if tube is stored at ambient temperature (15 to 30˚ C).
