Methodology
Conventional Culture Technique
Full identification will be performed at New Hampshire Public Health. Blood culture for yeast identification will be referred to Mayo Medical Laboratories.

Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Blood Specimen for Yeast
1. Sterilize top of BACTECTM aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
2. See “Microbiology” in “Special Instructions” for patient preparation and collection instructions.
3. Using a syringe or butterfly collection kit for direct inoculation, draw 20 mL of blood.
4. Transfer 10 mL of blood into aerobic bottle and 10 mL of blood into anaerobic bottle.
5. Label bottles with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Multiple cultures must be drawn at different times and different sites.
2. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Other Specimen for Yeast
1. Obtain specimen using a Fisherbrand® transport swab.
2. Return swab to sterile Fisherbrand® transport tube to ensure specimen preservation.
3. Label tube with patient’s full name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if available), date and time of collection, location of patient, and type of specimen.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
